Script Development Ideas

My film will compare people’s initial personas, to the anxieties and emotion that happens within them. The scene is set within a classroom, with the protagonist in the middle, at the back. The opening scene will consist of a handheld camera moving about the class, introducing us to the initial reckless impressions of the class of teenagers. The set and costume will only consist of a bland colour scheme, using white and grey, to highlight the lack of genuine emotion that these characters are willing to share. There will be an underlying dialogue to this scene, initially seeming non-diegetic but later being revealed as a voicemail from the protagonist’s phone. This creates an ambiguous tone to the opening scene.

Another realm is introduced in the film, which is much darker, using the theme of light and darkness to present an inner conflict. This realm represents how the protagonist sees the world in terms of their anxieties. Contrasting to the light world, the dark world will have a still camera, to present a view of the class, uncorrupted by personas. Mid shots of the class-mates will straight cut to, dark close ups of them, dehumanising them as they represent their anxieties. General noise in the light world will be amplified in the dark world, to highlight how affected the protagonist is by their surroundings. For example, a pen tapping would turn into a drum banging, and the teacher’s voice into a musical whine As the protagonist gains the courage to raise their hand, these noises build a non-musical orchestra. Aside from handheld/non-handheld, the camera movements are similar between the two worlds, however, the dark world will move in slow motion, so as they both move in the same speed, it highlights the dark worldemotional struggle to accomplish what happens in the light world. The protagonist raises their hand and answers the question in long shot, making them seem like the rest of the class, losing all cinematic elements of the dark world.
